The holidays are over, but we are still in the middle of the Winter Solstice. I happen to love the winter season because my family and I light the fireplace, eat warm stews and watch the snow fall all around us. While this can be wonderfully relaxing for adults, it can be rather boring for young kids.
The Truckee Meadows is a wonderful place to raise a family. With an average of 252 sunny days per year, there are plenty of outdoor activities for you and your children to enjoy. That being said, there are numerous ways to have a great time during the winter months:
1. The Discovery Museum: The Discovery Museum opened in 2011 and has since become a home for children to immerse themselves in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. There are dozens of hands-on galleries and exhibitions all designed to offer new opportunities for children to explore diverse and exciting topics. The Discovery Museum is opened year-round and a perfect place for your children to have fun but also learn during those snowy afternoons.
2. Fly High Adventure Parks: If your child needs to burn off extra energy, but the weather won’t allow you to visit your neighborhood park, then Fly High Adventure Park is the perfect place for you. Fly High is an enjoyable trampoline park that accommodates all children (and adults) from beginners to experienced jumpers. It is also a perfect place to host a birthday party. They offer many different packages where you can reserve a room, order pizza, and watch your kiddos jump 8 feet high before they dive into cake and ice-cream.
Not all winter activities are restricted to indoors. Reno is located approximately 45 minutes from Lake Tahoe and the most fun activities can be found within the slopes of the Sierras.
3. Mount Rose Ski Resort: Located at 8,260 feet, Mt. Rose Ski Resort is about 25 minutes from Reno and close to Lake Tahoe’s North Shore. Mt. Rose offers youth programs, ski lessons, snowboarding, lift tickets and ski rentals. With exception of hazardous weather, the ski resort is open most days from October to May.
4. Adventure Mountain Lake Tahoe: This premier family park is located at the top of Echo Summit at an elevation of 7,350 feet. Adventure Mountain is a snowy paradise that offers sledding, tubing and numerous snow activities. The park is open 7 days a week and is equipped with everything you will need to safely sled down the mountain.
As a mother, I know how challenging it can be to keep your kiddos engaged during the winter months. I hope my suggestions have helped you and your family discover all that Northern Nevada has to offer. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
